3 Steps To Going Viral

Main Content Add comments

Thousands of online marketers work for many years trying to produce something that becomes viral content. It’s almost like a holy grail in marketing because having that happen can change your business for the better in a very short time. Unfortunately there is no way to predict what work will go viral and what work will simply be passed over. You can do things a certain way, follow particular guidelines that can contribute to the chance of ‘going viral’ with your content. Some may consider these guides as nothing new, but it’s the little things that often add-up and produce something spectacular.

Make sure your work can be seen. Creating the work is not enough. People must know of its existence. Submitting to social bookmarking sites is one of the best ways to do this. Digg, Reddit and StumbleUpon are great (and free) services that you can submit your work to. People surf these sites frequently while looking for the next big news item. All it takes is for one or two of these users to click on your links and you go from being nonexistent to well known. Make it easy for people to find you. You won’t ever go viral if people have to look for your work.

Ensure that your work is easy to share offline too. You don’t have to confine your marketing efforts to the internet just because you make your sales and promote your work online. Offline viral content can be just as contagious. Make sure that people can still share your work with those that don’t have internet access by printing, burning copies and easily sending it to them. You could do this and get a load of new customers.

Here’s one for you – pretend to be clueless about something.

Of if you’d rather not, then simply say you’re clueless about it. Don’t be afraid to admit that you do not know something and ask for help with it. People will be more likely to at least comment, and offer help, if you’re just clear and open about being clueless. Or, you can default to faking it and then say something totally off-base in your work. You’ll see this done many times by quite a few internet marketers. But be aware of what you’re doing – you’ll have to live with whatever it is.

In a lot of ways the compelling factor with viral content is not so much the content, but the ability to grab someone’s attention and make them want to know more. Obviously, you cannot achieve that with every piece of content you produce. If you give these common sense guidelines a shot, your chances of something good happening will only get better.
